What the Language Industry Is Missing: AI Insight and True Multilingualism

Today we’re diving into two critical gaps holding back our field: a shallow understanding of AI’s real impact, and a cultural bias toward English that undermines true multilingualism. Let’s explore how the newly launched AI Localization Think Tank at GALA2025 aims to bridge these divides—and what it means for every stakeholder in the localization ecosystem.

The AI Literacy Gap in Localization

Every day feels like a sprint to keep up with the latest model release or platform demo, yet few of us pause to ask, “What does this actually change for my workflow?” Too often, conversations around AI in localization start and end with buzzwords—machine translation, neural networks, LLM integration—without digging into practical implications. That lack of genuine know-how forces teams into reactive mode, chasing hype instead of building sustainable, scalable processes.

The Need for Unbiased, Inclusive Forums

One of localization’s blind spots is perspective. When only one stakeholder—be it a big LSP, a corporate buyer, or a tech vendor—drives the narrative, the solutions cater to their biases. What we need are truly open forums where buyers, in-house teams, freelancers, researchers, academics, and vendors come together on equal footing. No paywalls. No hidden agendas. Just free, collective wisdom to map out how AI should integrate responsibly into our daily work.

Why True Multilingualism Matters

Here’s a reality check: once a group gets too linguistically diverse, we default to English for “efficiency.” But if localization’s mission is to empower communities to access content in their mother tongue, why do we insist on English in our own meetings and publications? This isn’t a technology limitation—it’s a cultural one. Treating multilingualism as a hurdle rather than a baseline undermines our credibility and weakens the very industry we’re trying to build.

Lessons from the AI Localization Think Tank

Launched at GALA2025, the AI Localization Think Tank brings together experts across every corner of our field. It’s not about crafting a manifesto; it’s about rolling up sleeves and sharing raw, unfiltered insights. Some highlights:

  • Diverse Voices: From volunteer academics translating complex research to solo translators experimenting with open-source models, everyone’s at the table.
  • Practical Focus: Real case studies on integrating AI into day-to-day workflows, not just grand visions.
  • Multilingual Ambition: Plans already underway to produce content in multiple languages—recognizing that true inclusion starts with communication in our own mother tongues.

    Moving Forward: Two Critical Imperatives

As the industry accelerates, two foundational shifts will define success:

    1. Actionable AI Expertise: Stop treating AI as a black box. Develop clear, hands-on practices that link model capabilities to concrete localization tasks—post-editing, terminology management, quality assessment, and beyond.
    2. Authentic Language Equity: Commit to multilingualism internally as passionately as we advocate for it externally. That means translating our materials, hosting multilingual events, and holding even the biggest players accountable for inclusive communication.
